Ingrid Laubrock

Jazz Composition - Winner 2006

Ingrid has been composing and performing her own work since 1996 when she was much involved in London’s Brazilian and Latin scene. She was one of the founder members of Brazilian quartet NÓIS4 (formerly As Meninas) and as saxophonist and long-time member of Monica Vasconcelos’ band for whom she has also composed.

The difference in her Latin-based debut album ‘Who is it’ and her subsequent release ‘Some Times’ in 2001 revealed a sea change in the development of her compositional style which was encouraged by a period of study in the US with renowned saxophonist and educator David Liebman. The record involved a variety of approaches using chromatisicm and counterpoint as a basis for some and others leaning towards more intuitive and lyrical style.
The regard for personal creativity and improvisation remains at the centre of Laubrock’s writing, allowing her band members creative space to interpret the compositions and keeping the music fresh and exciting. Her own quartet was upgraded to a quintet for the recording of her third album, Forensic released in May 2005.
Having studied music from the age of 4 in Germany, Ingrid is a consummate performer both as a singer and on saxophones having performed
internationally with Billy Cobham, Dina Carroll, Gabrielle, David Liebman and many others. She is one of the founder members and composers for the prestigious F-IRE collective, winners of the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation 2004. a
